J Is for Joyful
That belly-full-of-laughter, eyes-lit-up, rolling-on-the-floor feeling. Joy needs no permission — it is the raw, magnificent truth of being fully alive in a single moment.

J Is for Joyful
What a feeling it is to beam from ear to ear.
That true, belly-full-of-laughter joy. The kind that has you rolling around on the floor, gasping for breath, tears streaming down your face — and not a single part of you wanting it to stop.
When was the last time you had one of those moments?
That is joyful.
No Permission Required
Here is the thing about joy: it does not wait for the right circumstances. It does not ask whether you have earned it, whether the timing is good, or whether everything in your life is in order first.
Joy is not a reward. It is not a destination. It is not something that arrives once the hard work is done or the problems are solved.
Joy is available right now — in this breath, in this moment, in the spark that lives inside you whether you tend to it or not.
No permission needed. Just the raw, unfiltered truth of how you feel when you let yourself feel it fully.
The Spark
You know the one.
It is that moment your eyes light up for no particular reason — only that something inside you catches fire. A memory surfaces. A song comes on. You catch a glimpse of a colour in the sky that stops you mid-step. Someone says something that lands in exactly the right place, and suddenly you are laughing in a way that surprises even you.
That spark could come from anywhere.
A memory of a trip you took years ago — the smell of the air, the sound of the place, the feeling of being completely present and completely free. An act of kindness you witnessed or received that reminded you how good people can be. A moment of affection — a hug that held on a little longer than expected, a look that said everything without a word.
A walk. A meal. A conversation that went on far longer than planned because neither of you wanted it to end.
Whatever it is — that moment you felt so alive, so open, so fully present to the magnificence of all that life is — that is your joy. And it belongs to you.
Recall It on Purpose
One of the most underused practices in a grateful life is the deliberate recall of joy.
We are wired to remember what hurt us. The difficult moments tend to leave deeper grooves. But joy — real, full-bodied joy — is just as real, just as worthy of being remembered, just as capable of shaping who we are.
So today, let yourself go back.
Close your eyes if you wish. Think of one moment — just one — when you felt that spark. When your whole body was in it. When you were not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow, only the glorious, ridiculous, beautiful now.
Sit with it. Let it move through you again. Notice where you feel it in your body — the chest, the belly, the face. Let yourself smile. Let yourself laugh if it comes.
You are not being frivolous. You are not wasting time. You are doing something deeply important: you are reminding yourself what it feels like to be fully alive.
Carry It Forward
Joy is not just a feeling to be enjoyed in the moment and forgotten. It is a compass.
The things that light you up — the people, the places, the experiences, the memories that make your eyes spark — those are clues. They are pointing you toward what matters most to you, toward what makes your particular life worth living.
Pay attention to them. Seek them out. Create more of them, deliberately and unapologetically.
And when the days feel heavy — because some days will — come back to this. Come back to the memory of that laughter, that spark, that moment of pure aliveness. Let it remind you that joy is not gone. It is waiting, as it always has been, just beneath the surface.
Ready to rise the moment you invite it.
Tomorrow we continue our alphabet of a grateful life. Come back for K — another doorway, another invitation.
